Chief Shutze was a twenty-one year veteran of the Houston Fire Department. He died when the Chief’s Chemical Truck, housed at Station 7, overturned as it hit an esplanade in the 5100 block of Main Street. This accident occurred while the fire fighters were en route to a house fire, which destroyed a garage apartment at 2012 Bolsover. The cause given for the night time accident was that the amber warning light used to warn drivers of the esplanade was burnt out. Chief Shultze was killed instantly. The fire fighter also on the apparatus received serious injuries and the driver of the fire truck sustained only minor injuries.
